Aldi launches its first English sparkling wine
30 Sep 2016

Supermarket set to boost wine range with premium, home-grown fizz

In response to increasing consumer demand for home-grown fizz, Wine Retailer of the Year,[1] Aldi, is launching its first English sparkling wine, created in collaboration with the award-winning Denbies Wine Estate in Surrey.

The Chalk Valley Quality English Sparkling Wine, £14.99, has been developed exclusively for Aldi shoppers by the supermarket’s expert buying team and Denbies’ world class winemakers. On sale at aldi.co.uk from 2 October, the premium sparkler will champion the growing English wine industry and satisfy shoppers’ ever increasing thirst for locally sourced food and drink[2]. In a recent survey, 11% of Brits said that English wine was the best in the world[3].

Selling over five million bottles of fizz in 2015 alone, Aldi is fast becoming the UK’s go-to retailer when it comes to sparkling wine. The Chalk Valley Quality English Sparkling Wine will help to cement this reputation with shoppers and will be an exciting boost to its popular offering, which includes the International Wine Challenge award winning Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut, £10.99 and Crémant du Jura, £7.49.

The Chalk Valley Quality English Sparkling Wine is a high quality, dry and refreshing wine full of citrus aromas, a hint of flora and brioche, thanks to a higher percentage of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes than some English sparklers. It has a creamy texture, long, zesty finish and finely balanced acidity which is sure to prove popular with Aldi’s fizz fans.

John Worontschak, Head Winemaker at Denbies Wine Estate, comments: “We’ve been making the finest English wines on the Denbies Estate since 1986 and are delighted to have had the opportunity to work alongside Aldi to create an exclusive blend, making the very best of English sparkling wine accessible to all.”

Tony Baines, joint Managing Director of Corporate Buying, comments
“The English sparkling wine market is booming as more and more Brits are recognising it as a world class product, worthy of going head to head with the finest Proseccos and Champagnes.
Our buying teams have listened to this increasing consumer demand and we are proud to introduce the top quality ‘Chalk Valley Quality English Sparkling Wine’ to wine drinkers nationwide.”

Denbies Chalk Valley Quality English Sparkling Wine will be available online at aldi.co.uk and in selected stores nationwide from 2 October, priced at £14.99, available while stocks last.
