'Berry' British strawberries arrive in Lancashire earlier than ever
27 Feb 2017

This year, thanks to local grower Medlar Fruit Farm, freshly grown British strawberries are set to arrive in Aldi stores earlier than ever before. The first punnets of strawberries will be available in selected stores in the Lancashire region from 28th February, officially declaring that summer is on its way!
Medlar Fruit Farm, a resident grower in Lancashire, part of the Berry Gardens cooperative, produced the first yield of strawberries – ahead of any other supplier – and delivered it directly to Aldi stores in the Lancashire region ensuring customers get to enjoy them at their freshest and most flavoursome!
Medlar Fruit Farm is part of Berry Gardens, a British co-operative founded over 40 years ago and is a leading producer of berries and stone fruit.
A spokesperson from Berry Gardens, said: ‘We aim to deliver only the very best quality fruits and are delighted to be able to offer customers British strawberries even earlier than last year. It’s great to have support from retailers such as Aldi to guarantee that customers get to enjoy produce that is home-grown.”
The early arrival of strawberries will help Brits shake off the gloominess of colder months and spring into summer to relish the quality of summer’s favourite fruit for even longer. Fresh British strawberries are known to be best for taste, quality and the environment, and shoppers can enjoy a head-start preparing summer dishes such as strawberries and cream and strawberry tarts.
Tony Baines, Joint Managing Director of Corporate Buying at Aldi, said: “We’re looking forward to bringing summer into stores earlier this year. By working closely with our suppliers and listening to what our customers want, we have been able to deliver strawberries ahead of the usual season.
“We are proud to be first to market with British strawberries and delighted to be offering these home-grown classics to our customers for an increased amount of time.”
Aldi recently won Fresh Produce Retailer of the Year at the UK Fruit and Veg Awards 2016.
