  • Supermarket wins 51 medals at international competition
  • Wine range awarded two Gold, 20 Silver and 29 Bronze medals in 2018 competition
  • Fashionable Rosé, Riesling and Crémant Du Jura take home Silver medals
[Thursday 10th May 2018, UK] Supermarket Aldi has tickled the taste buds of wine experts – taking home an astonishing 51 accolades at the 2018 International Wine Challenge (IWC). One of the world’s most respected drinks competitions, the IWC pits the very best wines from around the globe against each other in a series of rigorous blind taste tests.
In the latest announcement of IWC medals, Aldi’s crisp and elegant Exquisite Collection Crémant Du Jura 2015 (£7.99) scooped a Silver medal. In recent times, this French sparkling wine has undergone significant revival, with a recorded 3.7 million bottles sold across the UK according to  the latest figures from the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA). Crémant’s renaissance is evident of the UK’s growing love for sparkling wines, with more and more drinkers seeking quality alternatives to Champagne.
Judges also tasted a sneak preview of the Instagram worthy Fleur de Prairie Côtes de Provence Rosé 2017 (£7.29), which will hit Aldi’s shelves in July. The pink tipple was awarded a coveted Silver medal, adding to the supermarket’s ongoing success in the rosé category, where sales have grown by 15% year on year.
Having won over Good Housekeeping Institute already last month, and coming out top in the consumer champions’ Riesling taste test, Aldi’s Exquisite Collection Clare Valley Riesling 2017 (£6.99) was also praised by IWC experts. Riesling has become a popular choice for UK wine drinkers this summer, as more and more health-conscious shoppers opt for lower ABV wines.
Other stand-out products from the awards include two customer favourites from last year’s Christmas range - a 1992 vintage Maynard’s Port and a premium Ch De Myrat Sauternes Grand Cru Classe 2013. Both took home Gold accolades.
Julie Ashfield, Joint Managing Director of Corporate Buying at Aldi UK, comments: “We pride ourselves on stocking great quality, affordable wine, and we’re delighted to receive recognition at the International Wine Challenge yet again.
“Our UK based buying team keep an eye on consumer trends within the wonderful world of wine and this year rosé wines, lower ABV’s and alternatives to Champagne are topping wine enthusiasts’ shopping lists, so it is absolutely fantastic to see that those wines within our range are being praised by industry experts.”
Aldi has had a stellar year so far, with over 70 award wins for its beers, wines and spirits range and having knocked Waitrose off top spot as Britain’s favourite supermarket in the Which? customer satisfaction survey 2018.
