- Popular wine aged in ex whisky barrels has achieved cult status in US
- Supermarket Aldi now bringing one of these unique wines to its shelves, for just £8.99
Bourbon aged wines break from tradition by being aged in used bourbon barrels rather than new oak barriques as is customary, resulting in a refined and full-bodied wine with bold, spicy flavours.
Bourbon aged wines have been taking the US by storm, developing a cult following driven by bourbon’s huge boom in popularity (American whiskey volume up 6.4% YOY), and now Aldi is amongst the first UK supermarkets to bring the trend to its shelves.
Hailing from the vineyards of California, Aldi’s £8.99 premium offering is made by winemakers Stave & Steel, who have seen huge growth within the US retail sector for these innovative bourbon aged wines, which have grown sales by 180% YOY.
The wine is full of rich ripe dark cherry and blackberry flavours, combined with smoky bourbon aromas of subtle spice, vanilla and caramel with a smooth, long finish – perfect for dads who enjoy both punchy characterful red wines and a nip of bourbon.
Aldi’s wine expert Sam Caporn, The Mistress of Wine comments: “In the same way that a much-loved Malbec or Zinfandel appeals to lovers of full-bodied reds, Aldi’s Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet Sauvignon is ripe, spicy and long with dark berry fruits – the perfect Father’s Day gift for dads who love their rich reds!
“It’s great to see Aldi adding new and innovative wines to its award-winning range, especially at such amazing value prices. It means that the wonderful world of wine can be opened up to all, with more shoppers being offered the opportunity to try something new.”
Pioneers of innovation in the wine aisles, this year Aldi has launched more new wines than ever before, with over 70 bottles having received international awards already. The supermarket recently launched a wedding wines service online at Aldi.co.uk, offering its shoppers the ideal way to stock up before their big day.
