  • Aldi becomes the first discount supermarket to permanently offer Coconut Oil to its customers
  • Own-label Coco Loco Coconut Oil will cost up to 40% less than similar products
  • The supermarket sold 60,000 units in just one week
  • Permanently on Aldi’s shelves from 8th February 2016
Aldi has announced that it is to become the first discounter to sell coconut oil permanently, due to its huge popularity with customers.

The supermarket’s Coco Loco Coconut Oil sold out within days of going on sale when it was first introduced to customers as a Specialbuy in September 2015.

After selling 60,000 units sold in just one week, Aldi increased the stock levels by 98 per cent when Coco Loco was introduced again in January 2016, in order to meet customer demand.

Sales of coconut oil have more than tripled nationally in the past year, from £4.4m to £14m, according to market researcher Kantar World Panel (52 weeks ending 13th September 2015). Favoured by A-list celebrities including Gwyneth Paltrow and Miranda Kerr, coconut oil is famed for its versatility. It can be used for healthier frying, mixing in salads as a dressing, in smoothies and even as a beauty treatment.

In response to growing customer demand in the UK, Coco Loco Coconut Oil, made from organic, 100% raw pressed coconut oil will be available in all Aldi stores from 8th February 2016 and the discounter has promised to secure the price at just £2.99 for 300ml.

The low price means it will cost up to 40 per cent less than similar coconut oils sold at supermarkets and health food shops. In contrast, Asda is selling The Groovy Food Company Organic Virgin Coconut Oil at £4.00 for 283ml, with the same product also being sold at Tesco for a more costly £5.99.

Health-food specialist Holland & Barrett’s Perfectly Pure Coconut Oil is priced at £15.49 for 453g, offering customers a saving of over £2.40 per 100ml when they choose to shop at Aldi.

Tony Baines, Joint Managing Director of Corporate Buying at Aldi, said: “Coco Loco Coconut Oil has proven to be hugely popular with our customers. Its unbeatable combination of high quality and great value makes it extremely attractive to shoppers.”

“By making Coco Loco Coconut Oil part of our core all year round range, we’re offering our shoppers another reason to make healthy choices at affordable prices both in the kitchen and in their beauty regimes.”
