AWARD GINNING! ALDI’S OWN BRAND GINS ARE NAMED AMONGST BEST IN THE WORLD
17 Aug 2018

  • Own-label gins receive international medals
  • Aldi’s Topaz Blue Premium Gin beat Berry Bros. & Rudd London Dry Gin, which retails at 2 times the price
  • Supermarket sells over 12,000 bottles of its highly acclaimed Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin every day

Supermarket Aldi has been awarded two accolades at the world-renowned Spirits Business Gin Masters, including a coveted Gold medal for its Topaz Blue Premium Gin (£13.99), beating off stiff competition from bottles costing up to 2 times the price[1], and beating well-known brands including Beefeater and Berry Bros & Rudd.

Entered into the Spirits Business Gin Masters for the first time this year, Aldi’s Topaz Blue Premium Gin (£13.99) is distinctive by its wild botanicals and select fruits taste. The gin’s unique flavour tickled the judges taste buds during the stringent blind taste tests, and beat Berry Bros. & Rudd London Dry Gin, which sells at twice the price1.

Silver medal winner, Aldi’s Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin 70cl (£9.99), remains a firm favourite amongst experts and shoppers alike, having already been awarded Gold at this year’s International Spirits Challenge, as well as scooping three industry awards in the last 12 months and Good Housekeeping Institute’s seal of approval. Aldi now sells a whopping 12,000 bottles of this sought-after gin every day, one of its bestselling spirits.

The results come at a time when gins phenomenal popularity is still soaring. According to the WSTA, sales of ‘mother’s ruin’ in the UK broke another record last month, reaching £1.5 billion or roughly 55 million bottles in the 12 months to the end of March 2018[2]. Unlike ‘peak prosecco’, the gin trade shows no sign of slowing down, and is set to become a 2 billion industry by the end of the year.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, said: “It’s always an exciting moment when a distinguished awarding body recognises our range on the international stage, and we’re delighted to see that our great-value gins have trumped the competition yet again.

“The UK’s thirst for gin is still going strong, so we’re delighted to have expanded our range and launched our first ever Gin Festival this summer. From artisan gins, to gin liqueurs, there is something to suit all tastes and budgets at Aldi.”

These accolades for Aldi’s trophy cabinet add to a fantastic year so far for the supermarket’s spirits range, which has taken home over 34 medals so far in 2018. Aldi was also awarded the coveted title of ‘Own Brand Range of the Year’ for the second year running at the International Spirits Competition.
