- Sales of cassette tapes see huge increase as retro tech makes a comeback
- Supermarket chain Aldi makes the trend affordable for all with new Boombox
The Official Charts Company recently revealed that cassette sales were up 90% year-on-year, with a whopping 50,000 cassette tape albums being bought in the UK last year alone. Global artists from Take That to 30 Seconds to Mars, and even Ariana Grande, are all taking to tape – and what better way to enjoy them than through a classic Boombox. Aldi’s great-value gadget comes in at under £30, giving shoppers a saving of around £200 compared to similar products on the market.
Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, said: “In a society obsessed with the latest tech, it’s great to see cassette tapes experiencing a revival. There’s definitely a growing trend for nostalgia and we’re pleased that we can make these types of items accessible and affordable for all. Real music lovers will be hard-pressed to find a deal as good as this, so we expect the Boombox to be snapped up in record time, especially as retro tech is so high on customer’s wish lists right now.”
Just like Star-Lord of Guardians of the Galaxy fame, you too can make your very own mixtape with the built-in recording function, which records straight from the radio. If you want to mix in a bit of 21st century tech then there’s options to use Bluetooth connectivity, USB and SD slots and a headphone jack. Warning – with two 8W x-bass speakers and released in time for Father’s Day, this product could cause some serious dad dancing!
With no swiping, shuffle buttons or headphones attached, Aldi found out what today’s kids make of retro tech.
