Joanna (34) and Aaron Thomas (33), from Kent, have beaten hundreds of outdoor-enthused entrants to be crowned champions of the ‘Aldi-Fresco’ competition, winning £1,000 of Aldi vouchers.
Their lovingly renovated outdoor space won the garden revamp crown thanks to its Love Island inspired fire pit, dedicated barbeque space and homemade pub named ‘The Mulberry Arms’, which was created during lockdown, and proves that Kent really is the Garden of England.
Aldi launched the competition in June as part of its Raising The Barbeque campaign, calling on the nation’s most creative DIY renovators to showcase their outdoor havens, as research showed 32 million Brits have this year revamped – or plan to revamp – their outdoor areas. Garden transformations galore came pouring in from across the country, but it was this ‘wow factor’ renovation that really caught the judge’s eye.
To help review the competition entries, the supermarket enlisted the help of DIY aficionados Shelley and Ashley Sargeant, from Doncaster, whose own creative garden transformation received thousands of comments and likes when pictures of the space were posted on Facebook.
The couple commented: “We loved all the entries, it was so hard to choose! Especially as they were all different and had their own great qualities. But Joanna and Aaron blew us away with their incredible space, which you can tell a lot of love and energy went into. We could definitely see ourselves having a glass of wine or two in front of that firepit!”
Joanna, an NHS worker at Southview Partnership and Aaron, a Senior Sales Executive, have been married for ten years, have two children, Lexi (9) and Ava (6) and recently moved in to their four-bedroom detached house in Hoo. Aside from being the proud owners of this outstanding entertaining area, the Thomas family have also won a year’s supply of Aldi shopping vouchers to keep the shelves of ‘The Mulberry Arms’ pleasantly stocked for those summer parties.
Aaron says: “We had so many issues moving into this home. It was stop-start for a long time due to the pandemic, so when we finally got in we really wanted to make the most of our outdoor area. We constructed all of this, in what was essentially dead space, for us as a family. It’s really opened it up and makes the garden feel a lot bigger.
“Constructing the pub was probably the biggest challenge, we experienced all four seasons during that time. There was some help from my dad and my brother in construction but I was left to my own devices when fixing the roof shingles and interior flooring.
“We are so pleased with the results. Not only do we now have an incredible garden that we can enjoy as a family and with friends, but it’s also been recognised by Aldi too. Our girls, Lexi and Ava, can’t wait to have friends round to visit. We are big Aldi fans and cannot wait to use our vouchers to fill the shelves in our pub!”
