ALDI NAMED BEST IN GOOD HOUSEKEEPING CHRISTMAS TASTE TEST

11 October, 2024

  • The supermarket’s champagne has been named Best Champagne
  • The retailer also earned top scores in the Turkey, Flavoured Christmas Pudding and Vegetarian Starter categories

Aldi is officially the go-to destination for Christmas this year, as the discount supermarket has been named as the ‘Best Overall Grocer’ at the prestigious Good Housekeeping Institute (GHI) Christmas Taste Test 2024[1].

The annual taste test, which tests 730 products from over 97 brands, also crowned Aldi’s mince pies, turkey and champagne as best-in-class in their categories.

The supermarket’s Veuve Monsigny Premier Cru Champagne, earned the title of ‘Best Champagne’, despite costing just £22. With delicate herbal notes, apricot aromas, and subtle flavours of orange zest and crème brûlée, the judges praised its ‘notes of refreshing lemon’ and ‘minerality’.

Wine expert and Mistress of Wine, Sam Caporn, also hailed the bubbly as the “best supermarket champagne in the UK” following a recent tasting.[2]

The celebration continues with Aldi’s Specially Selected Mince Pies, which cost just 38p each, wowing the panel of judges with their ‘soft, flaky pastry’ and ‘sweet, caramelised fruit filling’.

Aldi’s Specially Selected Roly Poly Whole Turkey was named ‘Best Whole Turkey’, with the GHI judges calling out its ‘natural, sweet flavour’ and ‘umami depth’.

Elsewhere, Christmas day dessert is covered with Aldi’s Specially Selected Orange & Maple Pudding (£9.99, 800g) which was named ‘Best Flavoured Christmas Pudding’, and returning favourite Specially Selected Ultimate 5 Year Vintage Cheddar Bake (£5.99, 300g) earned the top spot in the Vegetarian Starter category.

The news comes as Aldi has been named September’s cheapest supermarket by consumer champion Which?, taking home the accolade for the 11th consecutive month[3].

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, says: “Christmas has come early with the Good Housekeeping Institute awards. From starters to desserts – and even the bubbly – we’ve got every course covered with awards, and we are delighted to be named Best Overall Grocer. Shoppers can count on Aldi to make Christmas amazing without breaking the bank.”
