  • New research suggests Halloween has officially cast its spell on the nation, with 78% agreeing that Halloween has become a bigger celebration in the UK compared to five years ago
  • A whopping 81% of Brits are planning to splash out for Halloween, spending an average of £50 to get into the Halloween spirit this year
  • Aldi is helping shoppers keep costs from becoming frightening, with Halloween favourites including Halloween Inflatables (£9.99), Ghoulish Garlic Bread (£1.79) and Chocolate Bats (£1.99, 100g)

Aldi is giving witches and wizards a place to park this Halloween by opening a special parking bay for shoppers travelling by broomstick at its Water Lane store in York.

The store’s dedicated broomstick parking bay features a purpose-built rack, spooky signage and broomstick floor vinyl, giving magical shoppers somewhere to leave their broom while they stock up on Halloween essentials.

It comes after research by Aldi revealed York as the spookiest town in the UK, with more than one in four Brits (28%) saying they believe the historic city is the most haunted place in the country.

Already delighting local shoppers and children who have spotted it, the bewitching bay will be available to visit until 31st October, bringing a little sprinkle of Halloween magic to an everyday shopping trip.

The spellbinding broomstick space was revealed as new research of 2,000 Brits has lifted the lid on just how much the nation is getting into spooky season. A whopping 84% of Brits say they enjoy celebrating Halloween while the average person is planning to attend at least two Halloween events or activities this year.

And Halloween is no longer just a one-night affair. From dressing up and decorating homes to pumpkin picking and fright nights, Brits are embracing every opportunity to get into the spirit throughout October – with three in five (66%) saying they are decorating their home.

With so many spooky celebrations on the calendar, the cost of getting into the Halloween spirit can soon add up. Of those polled, 83% agreed Halloween has become too expensive in recent years, with Brits spending an average of £50 celebrating this year. Halloween costumes topped the list of spends (23%), followed by sweets and treats for trick or treaters (22%), decorations (12%), Halloween food and drinks (9%) and pumpkins (7%).

It’s not just Halloween shopping that is proving popular. Four in five (81%) Brits plan to splash out on seasonal activities and experiences this year. Pumpkin picking (48%) takes the top spot, followed by trips to themed amusement parks (27%), spooky cinema screenings (27%), ghost tours (25%), and immersive fright nights (24%).

And with four in ten (40%) Brits planning to host a Halloween party or gathering, there will be plenty of spooky soirees taking place across the country, while 63% plan to attend one themselves. A further one in five (23%) are even planning two different outfits for Halloween. But with the average Brit set to spend £65 on hosting, four in five (84%) say that getting good value for money is very important when shopping for the season.

From decorations such as Halloween Inflatables (£9.99) and Halloween Large Spiderweb (£7.99) to party food like the Creepy Breaded Chicken Bats (£2.99, 350g), Ghoulish Garlic Bread (£1.79, 235g), Witches Green Cheese Cauldron (£3.49, 175g), Gruesomely Spooky Sliders (£5.99, 518g) and Mummies and Tombstones (£3.49, 4-pack), Aldi is helping shoppers get fright night ready without the ghoulish price tag. Shoppers stocking up for 31st October will also find Aldi’s Halloween Sweet Tubs (£3.69, 600g), Chocolate Bats (£1.99, 100g) and Chocolate Lollies (£2.69, 150g) in store, ideal for trick-or-treat bowls. And those on the hunt for the savviest Halloween savings need look no further, as the supermarket is stocking the cheapest pumpkins of any UK supermarket, with prices starting at a bewitching 35p.

Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, said: “Halloween is all about a little surprise and magic, so we’re delighted to give shoppers at the Water Lane store in York something they won’t expect to see on their usual Aldi trip – a dedicated parking space for broomsticks. Complete with its own rack and spooky signage, it’s a spellbinding way to welcome witches and wizards while they stock up on frightfully good value Halloween favourites.”

With Halloween just around the corner, Aldi has everything shoppers need to get their homes, costumes and cupboards ready for fright night – with plenty of treats left over for the witching world.

The broomstick parking space at Aldi’s Water Lane store in York will be available to see until 31st October. Aldi’s Halloween range is available in stores now.
