Aldi has teased a new comical TV ad which features multi-legged megastar, Cuthbert, his adversary Colin, and three other high street cake characters (#CuthParty).
The new spot features Cuthbert, plus fellow supermarket caterpillar cake characters Wiggles, Morris and Clyde at a garden party, tucking into caterpillar chocolate cake. The party suddenly stops when Colin appears in front of the other caterpillars, with one exclaiming, ‘Well this is a bit awks…cake anyone?’
The advert, which was hinted at via Aldi’s social channels today ahead of its release on 1st May, sparked a witty response from Cuthbert fans nationwide, with comments including:
This marks one of two new ads this Spring as part of Aldi’s revamped ‘Like Brands Only Cheaper’ series. The campaign, which was praised as a consumer favourite in the 2010s*, showcases that despite the supermarket having lower prices, for its featured products, its products are as good as big brand alternatives.
Jemma Townsend, Marketing Director at Aldi UK, said: “What better way to show shoppers’ support of Cuthbert than by having him as the star in the returning Like Brands Only Cheaper series.
“Aldi exclusive brands are just as good as the brands people know and love and these adverts are set to remind people of that at a time where cost of living is increasingly important.”
The Cuthbert spot completes a two-pronged return with an additional advert, featuring blind Paralympics GB athlete Libby Clegg MBE, which landed on screens nationwide last month.
Cuthbert is still the cheapest of the supermarket caterpillar cakes at a pocket friendly £4.99, beating Morrisons, Asda and Sainsbury’s by £2 and M&S by £4!
