A NATION OF PLANT KILLERS!

14 April, 2026

ONE IN FIVE NEW PLANTS DIE WITHIN A WEEK, NEW RESEARCH* REVEALS – ALDI PAIRS WITH TIKTOK GARDENING GURU TO HELP

  • Research* by Aldi has unearthed that millennials are Britain’s biggest garden spenders, splashing out an average of £42.60 per trip – yet they’re also the most likely to see plants die within a week (26%, versus 22% overall)
  • TikTok-famous gardening expert, Adam Kirtland (@viewfromthepottingbench) has partnered with Aldi to share his top tips to help rescue the nation’s gardens – and the number one mistake Brits should avoid
  • Aldi’s NEW budget-friendly gardening range has everything shoppers need to get growing, with tools and essentials from as little as £2.99, landing in stores now

New research from Aldi has revealed that a wave of horticultural horrors is plaguing the nation, as over a fifth of Brits (22%) admit their plants have died within a week of planting. The issue is most prevalent among millennial gardeners (26%), alongside widespread weed problems (49%) and patchy lawns (40%).

With a huge portion of Brits (77%) getting their gardens started by April, it’s clear the nation is turning its attention to its outdoor spaces. It’s a big commitment, with over half of the nation (52%) spending four hours or more in their garden each week.

It’s also a costly endeavour; while Millennials are spending an average of £42.60 per trip, budget remains the biggest barrier for almost a fifth of people (19%).

But there’s no need to throw in the trowel just yet. To help the nation’s green ambitions bloom, Aldi has launched its new budget-friendly gardening range. With tools and essentials from as little as £2.99, it offers a convenient and affordable way to get gardens looking great.

And, for the one in five (20%) Brits whose biggest priority is a low-maintenance garden, help is at hand. Aldi has partnered with gardening expert Adam Kirtland, the face behind the hugely popular @viewfromthepottingbench Tiktok account (which has amassed over 141k followers), to show just how easy it can be.

One in five Brits (20%) say a lack of time is the biggest barrier to gardening or making their garden the best it can be. That’s why Adam has shared five quick and affordable tips to make gardening a success this spring, using Aldi’s incredibly affordable new gardening range:

  1. It’s All in the Technique: Avoid Overwatering

Adam says: “You’re probably overwatering your plants and it does more harm than good! Using Aldi’s Garden Spray Nozzle (£2.99) on the correct setting, is the trick! Use the ‘mist’ function to water seedlings”.

  1. Patience is Key: Avoid Planting Too Early

Adam says: “By planting out too early, you run the risk of frost getting your plants but by waiting just a couple more weeks, you’ll have plants that will flower all summer long.

“Use the Half Barrel Planter (£5.99) from Aldi to keep things flexible, so plants can be easily moved closer to the house if temperatures drop”.

  1. The Right Tools for the Job: Keep it Sharp

“Using the wrong tools for the job can impact your results” says Adam. “This time of year is all about cutting back old growth to make way for new, but blunt or worn tools won’t do your plants any favours. Sharp, clean tools are essential for healthy growth. Opt for a new Ratchet Pruner (£3.99) available at Aldi to trim plants effectively this season”.

  1. Give Plants Personal Space: Avoid Overcrowding

“Too many plants in one space leads to poor results – correctly space out your plants for the best results. Use Aldi’s Faux Rattan Hanging Baskets (£5.99) and Planters (from £4.99) to make the most of all height levels in an outdoor space”.

  1. Garden on a Budget: Smart Buys Beat Big Spends

“Gardening doesn’t have to be expensive! You don’t need to overspend – a few smart basics like a good Storage Box (£34.99) to keep your tools clean, a handful of good Garden Tools (£5.49) and even some brilliant Garden Boots (£9.99), will keep you gardening all summer long!”

With Adam’s time-saving tips and Aldi’s pocket-friendly prices, shoppers can get their gardens summer-ready for less. But budding gardeners better be quick – as with all Specialbuys, once they’re gone, they’re gone!

Aldi’s new gardening range is available in stores now whilst stocks last.
