It’s time to come out of the wine closet Chardonnay lovers! Fans of this well-known wine can now be loud and proud as Chardonnay is ready to make a grape comeback and put its days of Bridget Jones and Footballer’s Wives behind it.
Aldi’s Wine Expert, Sam Caporn MW, says:
“In recent years, Chardonnay at times has been shunned by shoppers in favour of fresh Sauvignons and easy to drink Pinot Grigios. But Chardonnay doesn’t just mean heavily oaked or strong buttery flavours. It can be just as fresh and fruity as other classic whites.
“The thing I love about Chardonnay is that it is so wonderfully varied and can change quite drastically according to where it is grown and how it is made. The grape variety itself can be quite neutral, so the winemaker has a blank canvas to work with and can largely shape the grape to express both a sense of place and how it is made.
“Aldi offers a selection of fantastic Chardonnays that will appeal to every palate and pocket. So if you’ve been part of the ABC (Anything But Chardonnay) camp, now’s the time to stop saying ChardonNAY and start saying ChardonYAY!
“Here is a small selection of some of my favourite Aldi Chardonnay wines:”
Exquisite Padthaway Chardonnay (£5.99, 75cl) – available in store
Premium and attractive. This Chardonnay is unoaked, dry and ripe with notes of stone fruits, bitter almonds, baked peach and honeysuckle. Not to forget its underlying tropical flavours that add to its intense and refreshing texture. Succulent and medium bodied, this wine creates the perfect aperitif moment at home.
Chablis AOC (£7.99, 75cl) – available online
Part of the ICONs range, this premium Chardonnay is from the Chablis region of France. With its cool climate, this 100% Chardonnay is steely, tight and fresh. Notes of green apples, lemon and honeysuckle helps to create its charming suppleness and long finish. Perfect to enjoy with fresh summer barbeques.
Grapevine Chardonnay (£3.69, 75cl) – available in store
Well balanced and easy drinking, this is a ripe and fruity Chardonnay with classic flavours of yellow apple, pear and peach. Lovely on its own, or serve with fish and white meat dishes.
