CUTHBERT IN BLOOM FOR FAMOUS FLOWER SHOW

21 May, 2026

  • Giant topiary Cuthbert has been given a spring “glow-up” with a fresh prune and floral makeover ahead of surprise appearance outside RHS Chelsea Flower Show
  • Stunt comes as Chelsea judges urge gardeners to embrace caterpillars and celebrate biodiversity with a natural “riot of colours” in show gardens
  • Free bunches of Aldi’s Specially Selected Luxury Bouquets were handed out to floral fans outside the London location

A giant topiary version of Aldi’s iconic Cuthbert cake has been spotted outside the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, arriving with a fresh summer glow-up in support of caterpillars everywhere.

The appearance comes as this year’s show celebrates biodiversity, wildlife-friendly gardening, with what organisers have described as a “riot of colours” across show gardens and displays.

Freshly pruned for the horticultural calendar’s biggest event, the towering topiary creation was seen soaking up the atmosphere outside the famous flower show after reports emerged that judges and exhibitors are being encouraged to embrace caterpillars in gardens.

Cuthbert appeared in full bloom after undergoing a seasonal spruce and prune ahead of his Chelsea debut.

Passers-by and Chelsea visitors stopped to snap pictures of the giant green spectacle, with many amused to see Cuthbert taking centre stage to represent caterpillars outside Britain’s most prestigious flower show.

Standing at an impressive 8ft tall and 12ft long, the larger-than-life topiary was dressed for the occasion in his own garden wellies and fresh flower crown worthy of SW3, made out of flowers from Aldi’s Specially Selected Luxury Bouquets

Floral fans were also treated to free Aldi Specially Selected Luxury Bouquets, which are available in stores now (£9.99), as they were handed out outside the London location set on the banks of the River Thames. The stunt comes as Aldi launches its Specially Selected Chelsea Flower Bouquet for just £12.99, in stores on 28th May.

Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, said: “When we heard that caterpillars were welcome at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show, we knew Cuthbert had to be there to show support.

“With his fresh makeover, consisting of a flower crown made from our Specially Selected Luxury Bouquets, yellow wellies and a matching bow tie, he was there to greet both attendees and passers-by as they soaked up the atmosphere.”
