From the 6th September, Wine Retailer of the Year[1] Aldi will be launching over 70 new wines in store and online as part of its autumn winter wine range. What’s more, to help navigate the offering, the supermarket has teamed up with Mistress of Wine and face of Aldi Wine School, Sam Caporn, to offer practical suggestions based on shoppers’ currant preferences.
From winter warming Italian reds to full flavoured French whites, Sam Caporn has curated the ultimate guide to this year’s autumn winter offering, using classic variants such as Chardonnay and Merlot as an indication of tastes.
Sam Caporn says: “Aldi has really dug deep with this year’s autumn wine range. It’s so refreshing to see that lesser known variants such as the Lebanese Red and Italian Vermentino will be gracing the UK’s wine aisles, so customers can get adventurous with their vino this winter! I hope my suggestions serve as a useful guide for wine fans.”
Sam Caporn’s wine suggestions
Those that LIKE Chardonnay
Those that LIKE medium to full-bodied whites with a lovely mineral finish will LOVE: Aldi’s Specially Selected Cotes du Jura (£7.99). Made from 100% Chardonnay, this tipple is beautifully elegant. Mineral notes are thanks to the limestone-rich Jurassic soils in the Jura region which lies between Burgundy and The Alps in Eastern France.
Those that LIKE Sauvignon Blanc
Fans of fresh, crisp whites that are full of citrus and lime will LOVE: Aldi’s Italian Vermentino (£5.99). Grapes grown in the sunshine of vineyards in Italy give this crisp white wine a fresh and tangy tasty!
Those that LIKE Pinot Grigio
Those that LIKE delicate, lightly scented wines that whisper of the Mediterranean will LOVE: Aldi’s Specially Selected Greco di Tufo (£6.99). Lemon yellow in colour with flavours of honeysuckle, lemon, lime and pineapple, a great example of this wonderful Italian wine.
Those that LIKE Syrah
Fans of spicy and black fruited reds will LOVE: Aldi’s Specially Selected French Minervois (£8.99). Consisting of aromatics of blackberry, violets, spice and liquorice. Very youthful and vibrant but also textured and flavoursome. Delicious!
Those that LIKE Merlot
Wine fans that enjoy lots of ripeness and flavour will LOVE: Aldi’s Specially Selected French Marselan (£6.49). This little-known French grape variety is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache and boasts wonderful juicy summer pudding flavours with notes with apple, plum, raspberry and blueberries. Definitely one to try!
If you LIKE Cabernet Sauvignon
Vino enthusiasts that LIKE structured, powerful and full-bodied reds, will LOVE: Aldi’s Specially Selected Lebanese Red (£7.99). Deep in colour with red and black fruit aromas; blackberry, cassis and black cherry.
