Aldi reveals transformable jacket as new research uncovers the nation’s bizarre bag for life habits
Nearly half of Brits (46%) say they regularly forget their shopping bags for the weekly shop and have revealed the bonkers lengths they’ll go to if they don’t have one to hand, from stuffing items in pockets to carrying shopping home in a bucket and wheelbarrow.
Landing on the autumn equinox and marking the arrival of jacket season, Aldi is offering a stylish solution with its latest must-have: an innovative jacket that transforms into a reusable bag.
New research into UK shopping habits has revealed a whopping 85% of Brits have a ‘bag of bags’ at home, whilst almost half of those polled (47%) admit to buying another reusable bag at least once a month after forgetting theirs, rising to 69% among Gen Z. Nearly half (47%) reveal they have cupboards full of unused carriers gathering dust at home.
Those in Yorkshire and Northern Ireland top the list of those most likely to buy a new bag after forgetting theirs, with one in five (21%) revealing they buy a new bag at least once a week.
Meanwhile Londoners are named the most likely group to specifically go back home after forgetting a bag, with 44% unwilling to add another bag to their collection.
While many people have cupboards stuffed with carrier bags, they can also be surprisingly loyal to their favourites, with 62% saying they have a reusable bag they always reach for — whether it’s because it’s sturdy (52%), they love the design (26%) or simply because it’s been by their side for years (18%).
To guarantee the nation never forgets its shopping bag again, Aldi has created a clever solution — to wear it. The supermarket’s new transformable jacket changes from an everyday coat into a reusable shopping bag in seconds.
The Swag For Life Jacket is a stylish, waterproof navy bomber with a statement funnel neck, pale blue and orange detailing, large pockets and Aldi branding on the front and back. It transforms into a grocery-sized shopping bag, making it the must have jacket.
Brits’ love for bags goes beyond the grocery shop, with 25% revealing they have used reusable shopping bags to store dirty clothes on holiday, whilst others have gone so far as to use them as laundry (21%) or work bags (16%).
However, when there’s no avoiding it, some Brits aren’t afraid to use bonkers alternatives, such as buckets (6%), picnic baskets (5%), baby changing bags (4%), pet carriers (3%) and wheelbarrows (2%).
Top 10 bonkers things Brits have used to carry groceries instead of a shopping bag:
A cardboard box (16%)
A sports kit bag (10%)
A school bag (8%)
A bucket (6%)
A picnic basket (5%)
A baby changing bag (4%)
A pet carrier (3%)
A suitcase on wheels (3%)
A laundry sack (2%)
A wheelbarrow (2%)
With two thirds of Gen Z (66%) saying they would find a jacket that transforms into a reusable shopping bag useful, and 74% saying bags for life should be more stylish, the Swag For Life Jacket is set to be a hit with younger shoppers.
As 52% reveal they’re looking forward to cooler weather and 55% look forward to wearing a jacket again, this new Aldi garment arrives perfectly in time for the change in season.
The jacket is available for a limited number of lucky winners to get their hands on via an email giveaway which launches on www.aldi.co.uk/swagforlife on 23rd September 2026.
Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, said: “Forgetting your bag for life is something we’ve all done, so our Swag For Life Jacket makes sure you’ll never be without one at the checkout again.
