PARENTS FEEL THE PINCH AS RESEARCH SHOWS 83% LOOK TO CUT BACK ON SPENDING AHEAD OF THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR

  • Aldi’s Back to School Report reveals 83% of parents will tighten the purse strings due to the impact coronavirus has had on their finances
  • One in three fear they will not be able to afford back to school necessities such as school uniform
  • Aldi’s £4.00 bargain school uniform bundle, accessories and subsidised private tuition aims to help struggling families

Research unveiled by Aldi today reveals 83% of parents are expected to cut down on spending by £44 per week on average. And with one in three concerned about the financial cost of the back to school season in particular, launch of Aldi’s best ever value school uniform at just £4.00 couldn’t have come at a better time.

The research, which delves into changing consumer habits and the impact of lockdown amongst over 2,000 parents and children[i], shows families across the UK are adopting new money saving tactics. A third state they’ll be savvier with leftovers (30%) and over half (53%) said they will continue to cook from scratch – which would be welcomed by a third of kids (31%) who say their parent’s cooking has improved since lockdown!

The findings also captured children’s thoughts on returning to school.  In a surprising turn, an overwhelming majority of kids said they missed school (98%) with half (49%) missing their teacher the most, followed by learning new things (22%), school dinners (19%) and even donning their school uniform (17%).

Aldi’s Back to School Report also shows that the difficulties of home-schooling have made parents and children more appreciative of teachers (50% and 40% respectively). Over half (55%) of parents admitted that they found it challenging to get their children to do schoolwork and one in five (21%) struggled with the actual schoolwork themselves, which is why Aldi this year, has launched subsidised private tuition with MyTutor, the UK’s leading online one-to-one tuition platform.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director for Buying at Aldi UK, comments: “We can see from our research that a huge number of families are making cutbacks due to the impact coronavirus has had on their finances and getting children school-ready is weighing heavily on some parents’ minds. That’s why we’ve been busy exploring how we can help support families as the new school year draws closer, offering parents the best quality products at the lowest possible price.

“We’re happy to see lockdown has also had some positive effects on family life and we hope all the children who have missed their teachers and the joys of learning enjoy their first day back to school.”
