Looking for something a little different to your usual go-to wine this summer? Well, look no further as Aldi has teamed up with wine expert, Sam Caporn, to reveal her top picks of lesser-known styles from the supermarket’s latest range.
With prices starting from just £5.99, Sam says that vino fans looking to venture to the “under the radar, unique and indigenous” side of wine will be rewarded with delicious tipples that don’t compromise on quality or value.
Is a Sauvignon Blanc or a Pinot Grigio your usual tipple? Look to juicy Rueda Verdejo or refreshing Picpoul de Pinet instead. Love a Riesling? Consider an Souvignier Gris blend.
A member of the exclusive Institute of Masters of Wine, Sam Caporn, says: “This summer, step away from your typical white wine picks and opt for something a little different such as a refreshing Picpoul de Pinet or fruity Luberon Blanc.
“Summer is all about zesty, easy-to-drink wines, and these whites certainly offer that! Originating from European hotspots such as Santorini and Southern France, these authentic gems bring some Mediterranean sunshine to your wine glass and create a holiday feel from home – even if it’s raining!”
Sam’s top picks will have shoppers on cloud wine – available in stores nationwide now:
Baron Amarillo Rueda Verdejo (£5.99, 75cl)
Who’s it for? Sauvignon Blanc lovers
Sam says: “From the Castilla y Léon region, this juicy but balanced wine offers pretty notes of lime, green apple, nectarine and quince, with a hint of galia melon. Pair with seafood tapas, paella, or a tomato salad – muy buena!”
Specially Selected Picpoul De Pinet (£7.49, 75cl)
Who’s it for? Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris fans
Sam says: “This is a refreshing and crisp summer tipple from the Languedoc region. Offering an attractive straw colour with notes of baked apple, plum, and nectarine. A classic match for oysters, fish, seafood spaghetti and calamari.”
Specially Selected Coteaux De Béziers Viognier (£8.49, 75cl)
The vibe: White wine with an aromatic, stone fruit oomph
Sam says: “Made from a blend of Viognier and Grenache grapes, this distinctive French wine offers notes of peach and nectarine with a lime-drenched finish. Enjoy with a chicken salad or a rich seafood dish for summery food perfection.”
Athlon Assyrtiko (£8.49, 75cl)
The vibe: White wine with zingy, fresh flavours
Sam says: “Santorini is regarded as the spiritual home for the Assyrtiko grape, so allow yourself to be transported to the beautiful Greek island with this fresh and elegant wine. With flavours of lemon, apricot kernel, and lime, it’s the ideal accompaniment with seafood, meaty fish grilled on the barbecue, baked scallops, and fresh homemade salads.”
Specially Selected The Puzzle (£8.99, 75cl)
Who’s it for? Riesling lovers
Sam says: “With intriguing aromatics of stone fruit, mango, lime, and pink grapefruit, this French tipple has a lingering yellow plum finish that is perfect with a Thai-inspired menu – think oriental salads, chicken satay and fish cakes.”
Specially Selected Luberon Blanc (£8.99, 75cl)
The vibe: Alfresco picnic dining
Sam says: “Crafted from Grenache Blanc, Vermentino and Roussanne grapes from the hills of Luberon, this well-balanced white offers aromas of melon, banana, and nectarine, with a nicely rounded, stone fruit palate. A fantastic pairing with savoury summer tarts, prosciutto and melon salad or roast chicken.”
