WINE EXPERT INSIGHT: WHY SCREW CAP WINES ARE GREAT FOR SUMMER

This summer is all about screw cap wines! Despite some wine enthusiasts dismissing these easy-to-drink options, wine expert, Sam Caporn, says that screw caps make summer sipping a breeze.

Having gained popularity in recent years[1], not only do screw caps offer practical features, but they also preserve freshness and don’t require decanting – perfect for alfresco drinking occasions.

A member of the Institute of Masters of Wine, Sam Caporn, says: “Some associate screw cap wines with low-quality, but that’s not the case. They are typically found outside of the ‘classic’ wine regions, and so are often great value for money!

“The quality of the wine is not indicated by its closure. In fact, screw caps preserve the characteristics of the wine without the fear of them being musty and spoilt from the cork.

“Not only are screw caps great for picnics and summer outings, as you don’t need to worry about spillages or carrying a corkscrew, but they’re also great for a glass or two at home. Just screw on the cap and pop in the fridge for next time.”

With prices starting from just £5.99, Sam suggests a selection of award-winning tipples from Aldi for shoppers to enjoy this summer. Available in stores now:

Unearthed Chiaretto Di Bardolino (£7.99, 75cl)

Made in the romantic location of Veneto, home to Italy’s beloved cities of Venice and Verona, this bright rosé is loved by industry experts and has been awarded a SILVER accolade by the Drink Business Rosé Masters[2], alongside three BRONZE wins from Decanter World Wine Awards[3], International Wine Challenge[4] and International Wine & Spirits Challenge[5]. It boasts fruity aromas of pear, redcurrant, raspberry, fresh strawberry and watermelon that meet a tangy lemon sherbet acidity on the palate.

A fan favourite of shoppers and wine experts alike, Saturday Kitchen’s Olly Smith comments: “This Greek rosé is set to take the world by storm.  Not too sweet, nice, dry and lively…an absolute smasher for the sunny weather, I’m 100% in!”

Pierre Jaurant Sud De France Rosé (£6.29, 75cl)
