Mint sauce is not just for Easter Brits have declared, with 75% defining themselves as defiantly pro-mint sauce.
New research, commissioned by Aldi, found that Britain is officially mad for mint, with 81% of those polled declaring their love for mint sauce. Over half the population (56%) say it is their favourite condiment and more than one in five (21%) confess to enjoying mint sauce on a spoon straight from the jar.
Wrexham has been revealed as the UK’s biggest mint sauce-loving city, with 90% admitting they can’t get enough of the green stuff, closely followed by Bath (89%) and Gloucester (88%). The West Midlands is the UK’s biggest mint sauce-loving county, with 82% declaring themselves as an enthusiast.
To celebrate the mint sauce lovers up and down the country, Aldi is giving away limited-edition bejewelled Bramwells Mint Sauce jars created in collaboration with luxury designer Maya Grisham. These adorable mini jars have been hand jewelled using hundreds of gemstones to replicate Aldi’s Bramwells Mint Sauce packaging and are perfect for handbag transportation – just decant your sauce and go. Among mint sauce devotees, tradition is being thrown out of the window when it comes to what to pair the condiment with. Fans admit to drizzling it not just over lamb, but chicken (25%), beef (23%) and even pork (14%), proving the sauce is no longer reserved for one meat alone.
People are going beyond just Sunday dinners for their mint sauce consumption, as one in five (20%) admit to dolloping a spoonful on a kebab, and 36% enjoy it with bangers and mash.
The study also discovered that the condiment is a staple ingredient in British kitchens, served with chips (22%), mushy peas (28%), and even ice cream (6%), with six in ten (58%) calling it “underrated”. Brits are also making space for mint sauce in drinks, as 20% say they would use mint sauce as a replacement for fresh mint in a Mojito.
The obsession with mint sauce runs deep among the nation’s fanatics, with almost a fifth (16%) confessing they’ve taken their own mint sauce to restaurants to satisfy cravings when it’s not on the menu.
Over four in ten (42%) admit to even stockpiling the sauce and keeping spares in the cupboard, with Wales revealed as the UK’s mint sauce stockpiling epicentre. In the capital, 6% of Londoners confess going through a jar of mint sauce each day.
