To gin or not to gin? Silly question as Aldi’s Haysmith’s Rhubarb & Ginger Gin (£14.99, 40%) has been named one of the best in the world at a prestigious International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC).
Adding to Aldi’s ever-growing trophy cabinet, the own-brand gin won the highest possible award, a Gold Outstanding, scoring the highest points within the competition. Despite costing less than £15, Aldi’s bottle beat Edinburgh Gin’s Rhubarb & Ginger option, which retails at around double the price of Aldi’s bottle.
“Magnificently well balanced with full, rich flavours of mouth-watering rhubarb, fiery ginger and chaste juniper”, Aldi’s flavoursome gin was praised by judges, scoring winning points all round.

The nation’s cheapest supermarket also took home double the number of awards to competitor Waitrose, who only scooped up seven medals.
Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK says: “We are extremely proud to have received the highest possible accolade for our own brand spirits. Now more than ever, we want to show that low prices don’t mean compromising on quality or taste.”
The discount supermarket picked up a total of 17 awards at the contest, including a Gold medal for its Glen Marnoch Limited Edition Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (£17.49, 75cl), being praised for its “lovely soft texture and solid length”.
