An estimated 13.6 million barbeques will take place in homes this Saturday, with 50 million burgers, bangers and steaks served up by the time Gareth Southgate’s England team kick off at 8pm, according to supermarket Aldi’s research.

The survey, carried out as part of Aldi’s Raising The Barbeque campaign, also found that two million football mad Brits will celebrate the quarter-final with a barbeque, even if it’s raining, as England raise the steaks against Ukraine.

Helping with the surge in demand, Aldi is today launching a range of fresh meat barbeque specials – with no Kiev in sight – just in time for the hotly anticipated sporting occasion.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, says: “This weekend, we expect sales – and goals – to soar as the country celebrates a monumental moment in history.

“Whatever the outcome of the match, we’re delighted to be a part of the celebrations, providing the best value barbeque products for what we hope is a banger of a day. Let’s hope the England team leads us to victory and many more barbeques to come.”

Aldi will be launching an a-bun-dance of barbeque goodies on shelves today, so shoppers can stock up in time for the big day, including Specially Selected British Wagyu Burgers (£3.29, 2 pack), Specially Selected Pork, Bacon & Maple Sausages (£1.99, 6 pack), The Best Ever Burger with Tasty Burger Sauce Melt (£2.99, 2 pack) and British Rump Steaks (£8.99, 4 pack).
