SUPERMARKET ALDI AND MISTRESS OF WINE SAM CAPORN REVEAL THE PERFECT SUMMER WINE PAIRINGS

In queso Brits didn’t know, the 25th of July is National Wine and Cheese Day, and to celebrate this, Mistress of Wine, Sam Caporn MW, has given her brie-lliant advice on which wine and cheese make the perfect pairings. With this delicious celebration of one of the nation’s favourite combinations falling in the middle of the July heatwave, Sam is giving shoppers the inside scoop on how to ditch the heavy reds and find a summer friendly white or rosé wine to complement a range of cheeses.

According to Sam, lighter wines can in fact be a better pairing option for cheese than reds.  Sam says: “While most people think of cheese and punchy red wines when matching the two, as a rule of thumb white wine is typically easier to pair with cheese. The zestiness of a white tends to cut through the creaminess, especially for softer cheeses like brie and camembert.”

So, whether it’s a fancy crisp white wine and cheese pairing, a touch of luxury fizz, or a fun and fruity rosé, shoppers can go big or goudahome with a selection of choices from Aldi that won’t break the bank.

Cambalala Grenache Blanc (£5.79, 75cl)

For full flavoured cheeses.

Sam says: ‘Opt for white wines as opposed to red, to allow the cheese to be the focal point of the pairing. This textured, dry Camablala Grenache Blanc pairs brilliantly with washed rind cheeses such as Taleggio and Epoisses due to its gentle citrus notes.’

Canadian Riesling (£9.99, 75cl)

The perfect partner in wine.

Sam says: ‘If shoppers only plan to serve one type of wine with a variety of cheese then Riesling is the go-to grape. The lively acidity of this wine cuts through the rich texture of creamy cheeses like Ricotta, Feta and even Camembert, to simultaneously complement rather than overwhelm the cheese.’

Mimo Moutinho Vinho Verde Rosé (£6.49, 75cl)

When it comes to summer salads things can only get Feta.

Sam says: ‘Lighter cheeses such as Greek Feta, Mozzarella and Goats Cheese pair well with this fresh and well-balanced rosé from the rolling hillsides of Northern Portugal. Created in the very gently sparkling Vinho Verde style this elegant wine is perfect for summer al fresco dining with a fresh Greek salad.’
