ALDI’S GREEK CHARDONNAY OFFERS UNBEATABLE VALUE AGAINST WINES MORE THAN DOUBLE THE PRICE

30 June, 2022
  • Mistress of Wine Sam Caporn was challenged to sample a Greek Chardonnay along with two classic French Chardonnays, finding extreme likeness in colour, aroma and flavour
  • Shoppers can save up to 75% by switching from expensive French bottles to Aldi’s Greek vino this summer

Isn’t it grape when a cheaper alternative of a premium wine can be found!? Supermarket Aldi is so confident in its Alpha Estate Greek Chardonnay 2018 (£14.99, 75cl), it recently challenged wine expert and Mistress of Wine Sam Caporn to put it to the test against French Chardonnays priced more than three times as much.

In a blind test, Caporn found the wines displayed incredible likeness in colour, aroma and flavour, meaning shoppers can not only save a pretty penny or two by making the switch to Aldi’s Greek vino this summer, but can impress discerning dinner party guests with a wine that holds up against far more expensive French bottles.

Caporn, who is one of just 419 people in the world who are qualified as a Master of Wine (MW), blind tasted Aldi’s Greek Chardonnay against Majestic’s Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc 20191 (£59.99, 75cl) and Laithwaites’ Maison Joseph Drouhin Chassagne-Montrachet 2019 2 (£55.00, 75cl).

Chassagne-Montrachet, a village in the illustrious Côte d’Or region of Burgundy in France, produces some of the most sought-after Chardonnay wines in the world, revered by wine critics and connoisseurs alike. Aldi’s Greek Chardonnay meanwhile comes from one of Greece’s most prestigious wineries, Alpha Estate, but is priced at just £14.99, 75% cheaper than the others tasted.

Sam explains: “All three wines displayed delicious notes of spice from the use of French oak, which is well-integrated with the elegant fruit.

“There was a distinct similarity of structure and colour – a beautiful lemon yellow – amongst all, but there were also subtle differences. I managed to identify the Alpha Estate after tasting each wine twice and was incredibly impressed that it held its own alongside such iconic fine wines. I actually preferred it to the Majestic Maltroye, as the fruit was rather ripe and the alcohol a little on the high side; 14.5% compared with Alpha’s 13.5%.

“Overall, the Alpha Greek Chardonnay is an extremely attractive proposition for wine lovers, bargain hunters and those who adore Chardonnay as I do.”

As well as being a highly esteemed Mistress of Wine, Caporn was awarded a Madame Bollinger Medal for Excellence in Tasting and is also a wine judge and Co-Chair at the International Wine Challenge, meaning her nose for wine is second to none.

The Greek Chardonnay taste test verdict cements Aldi’s reputation for having a fantastic selection of Greek wines. Last summer, around 100 bottles of Aldi’s £6.99 Greek Assyrtiko sold every hour following its launch, paving the way for a family of four new Greek wines to hit shelves this spring, including the Alpha Estate Greek Chardonnay.
